Here are the top nine things you need to know about the “reptilian humanoid” or “lizard people” myth/narrative.
With the viral video of the “reptilian” man on the plane from earlier this year—“that motherfucker back there is not real!”—still (somewhat) fresh in the internet’s consciousness, now is as good a time as any to do a deep dive into the whole “lizard people” narrative. With that in mind, here is a listicle of the top nine most fascinating and compelling facets of the myth, which offer lots of hearsay, speculation, and entertainment value!
1. THE ORIGIN OF THE REPTILIAN PEOPLE MYTH PER MAINSTREAM INTERNET SOURCES
It seems the internet largely cites political science professor Michael Barkun’s theory that the “reptilian people” narrative started with Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard, in his story “The Shadow Kingdom,” which was published in Weird Tales in 1929.

“The Shadow Kingdom” features Kull, a barbarian from Atlantis, battling the Serpent Men, an ancient pre-human race that rules from the shadows. The Serpent Men subscribe to a “Snake Cult religion” and have the ability to disguise themselves with magic.

2. THERE ARE POSSIBLE REFERENCES TO REPTILIAN PEOPLE FROM AS FAR BACK AS 5,500-4,000 B.C.
Despite what Wikipedia, et al. say, however, there are many (potential) references to a reptilian race from much longer ago, including ones from southern Mesopotamia, back between 5500–4000 B.C., in the form of figurines that seem to depict humanoids with reptilian features.

The terra-cotta reptilian artifacts were found in many ancient Mesopotamian cities and have painted dots on their torsos, which some interpret as being “scale-like.” They also have elongated heads and eyes, and have noses that look serpentine in nature.

3. ACCORDING TO NATIVE AMERICAN LEGEND, ‘LIZARD PEOPLE’ BUILT A VAST TUNNEL SYSTEM IN THE U.S.
According to one Native American legend, “lizard people” also built a vast tunnel system between three “lost cities” on the United States’ Pacific coast 5,000 years ago. A Los Angeles Times article from 1934, dubbed “Lizard People’s Catacomb City Hunted,” describes one such tunnel system supposedly discovered by “geophysical mining expert” G. Warren Shufelt.

In the LA Times article, author Jean Bosquet describes how Shufelt claimed to have used a proprietary “radio X-ray” device to detect “a maze of catacombs” (and “priceless golden tablets”) underneath Los Angeles. The Times also reported that Bosquet had consulted Hopi Native American Chief Little Chief Greenleaf, who imparted a legend of the three lost cities, which the lizard people dug prior to the occurrence of a “great catastrophe.”
Bosquet believed the lizard people were more intellectually and scientifically advanced than humans, and were able to dig their vast catacombs using only “powerful chemicals.”

4. DAVID ICKE IS NOW ONE OF THE BIGGEST PURVEYORS OF THE REPTILIAN PEOPLE NARRATIVE
Fast forward to the 21st century, and the reptilian people narrative persists. In 2009, Time magazine reported that “The Reptilian Elite” was one of the “world’s most enduring conspiracy theories.” Time specifically referenced David Icke as a key purveyor of the theory.

Icke, who has amassed a large following with his books, documentaries, and speaking tours, does indeed speak at length about the existence of reptilian humanoids. In the video immediately below, Icke explains how the “anti-human” agenda of the elites is “being driven by a non-human force.”
“This reptilian race is changing human society to suit itself, not least atmospherically,” Icke says. He notes that elites, such as royalty, “interbreed” with themselves to maintain their “superior bloodline” that’s “part human and part reptilian.”
Icke notes these hybrid human-reptilian hybrids are “blood vampires” and “energy vampires,” meaning that “they feed off of low-vibrational human energy.” That is, states of fear and anxiety.
“The more that human society can be structured and manipulated to put humanity in these low-vibrational emotional states,” Icke says, the more “they are generating the very energy these entities feed off.”
In regard to the human-reptilian race’s ability to “shapeshift” between human and humanoid reptile, Icke says the seemingly impossible feat is indeed possible because it’s a kind of mirage. He notes they’re able to change the way their “information fields” (the light bouncing off their bodies) is perceived in order to either represent their true reptilian selves or their human facades.
Icke specifically notes that “anyone observing that switch of a waveform information field… is going to first be decoding a human field… but [that] when the other [field] becomes the dominant one, the reptilian, to the observer [has shapeshifted] from human to non-human…”
5. SMASHING PUMPKINS LEAD SINGER BILLY CORGAN SAYS HE’S HAD AN ENCOUNTER WITH A ‘SHAPESHIFTER’ THAT SOUNDS REPTILIAN
With Icke’s description of the way these human-reptile hybrids are able to shapeshift in mind, listen to The Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan describe his encounter with a “shapeshifter” on Howard Stern’s radio show.
“Let’s just say I was with somebody once and I saw a transformation that I can’t explain,” Corgan tells Stern. While he doesn’t clarify that he saw a human shapeshift into a reptilian humanoid, he does say that he “saw” the transformation occur.
6. PRINCESS MARTHA LOUISE OF NORWAY’S PARTNER SAYS HE’S A HYBRID SPACE LIZARD
In a more direct example of somebody in the public eye confessing to knowledge of reptilian humanoids, American shaman Durek Verrett claimed he himself is one in a now-deleted Instagram post.
As Royal Central reported in October 2021, Verrett, partner to Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, claimed he isn’t just a hybrid lizard, but a hybrid space lizard. He wrote the following:
“I am a hybrid of a space lizard (“reptilian”) and Andromedia (princess from Greek mythology), and I also have ancient spirits from the ancient world. Lies have been told about our species that I want to address. We are a cluster of beings, and that means we have come here to create structures that help people to liberation. Space locks are here to loosen the system in a significant way. Everything that is locked in structures that actually limit or prevent people from seeing liberation, we shake. We come as disruptors to disrupt frequencies.”
7. THE NASHVILLE RV BOMBER SAID ‘LIZARD PEOPLE’ CONTROL EARTH AND ‘TWEAK’ HUMAN DNA
It is, of course, not only celebrities who have something to say about reptilian humanoids living amongst us. Anthony Quinn Warner, who detonated an RV bomb in Nashville in December 2020—killing himself and injuring eight people—also believed that “lizard people” controlled Earth and had “tweaked human DNA” in order to “put a switch into the human brain… so they can walk among us and appear as… human.”
8. THERE ARE COUNTLESS OTHER REFERENCES TO REPTILIAN HUMANOIDS THROUGHOUT HISTORY
There also countless other references to reptilian humanoids throughout history, as well as in highly speculative scientific theories. The “naga” in Hinduism, for example, are members of a class of mythical, semi-divine creatures that are half human and half cobra. American-Canadian geologist and paleontologist Dale Alan Russell even theorized the existence of a “dinosauroid”; that is, the descendant of a Stenonychosaurus dinosaur that evolved to fit the same ecological niche as humans.

9. THERE’S THE METAPHORICAL IDEA OF THE REPTILIAN HUMANOID AS WELL
Finally, we have the more grounded, realistic—and also metaphorical—idea of the reptilian humanoid, as presented by the late astronomer, scientist, and author Carl Sagan. In regard to his view on evolution, Sagan promoted the idea that every human brain has buried beneath its limbic system and neocortex a “Reptilian complex” or “R-complex.”
As Sagan describes in the video immediately below, one theory of the evolution of the human brain is that it has developed over millions of generations “from the inside out.” He notes that “capping the brain stem is the so-called R-complex” and claims that “it’s the seat of aggression, ritual, territoriality, and social hierarchies.”
Sagan notes the R-complex “evolved some hundreds of millions of years ago in our reptilian ancestors.”
In summary, even though there is exactly zero concrete evidence for the existence of reptilian humanoids, we still have Mark Zuckerberg. And it’s only reasonable to think of him as a lizard person until it can be proven otherwise.
